PYRCEO
High-Performance Pyroelectrics
THE CHALLENGE

Pyroelectric sensors convert temperature variations into electrical signals, enabling diverse applications such as infrared (IR) detection, gas sensing, motion tracking, and energy harvesting. Commercially available thin Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) film contains toxic lead and needs high temperature processing. This conflicts with Si-integration making such sensors relatively bulky and cost intensive.
OUR SOLUTION
At HZDR & DTU (Technical University of Denmark), a novel class of CeO₂-based pyroelectric materials has been developed. These films deliver twice the performance of state-of-the-art PZT films or ceramics - while enabeling CMOS compatible manufacturing processes. The result: higher sensitivity, smaller devices, and lower production costs - paving the way for scalable next-generation sensor solutions.
